William C. “Bill” Thompson, age 92, of Main Street, died at St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center on Sunday, April 28, 2019, unexpectedly as he was to transition back home this week.
Bill was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, on November 1, 1926, son to the late William F. and Velma G. (Brigham) Thompson. He was raised and educated in St. Johnsbury and with his mother’s approval, Bill joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 16. He was sent to Hawaii to assist in the rebuilding of runways following the Attack on Pearl Harbor. He was proud of his military service and was very proud to be in the Seabees. Upon his return to the states he married the former Germaine Sheltra and shared over 68 years together until her passing on July 6, 2015. They were a perfect pair, simply enjoying their time together, taking long rides to anywhere and nowhere. Germaine was the dispatcher for the Lyndonville Fire Department for many years and Bill was active for over forty. He kept close association there, especially as a member of Tiger Company, going in to the station weekly just to have a cup of coffee. He even got his spaghetti dinner from there this past Saturday night which made him very happy. Bill worked at Purina in St. Johnsbury nearly from the start and until it closed, then began working maintenance at Lyndon State College until he retired.
He is survived by his sister: Carol Young Stevens and husband, Ken, of St. Johnsbury, nieces and nephews: Duane Thompson, Jeff Young, Linda Winot, Bonnie Lacaillade, Patricia Hubbard, Allison Jurentkuff, Sarah Clingman and his very good friends that he referred to as best buddies: Jo-Ann and Tracy Charron of E. Burke.
He was predeceased also by siblings: Audna Matthews, Brigham W. Thompson, a brother-in-law: Irving Young and a nephew: Stephen Young.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Lyndonville where he was a longtime communicant at 11AM on Thursday, May 2, 2019, with Fr.Hahr as celebrant. Burial will immediately follow at St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery on Hill Street with Military Honors.
There will be no calling hours.
