William Southworth

Corinth, VT: William R. “Bill” Southworth, age 67, of Beaver Lodge Road, passed peacefully in his sleep at his home Wednesday morning, September 12, 2018.

Bill was born in W. Fairlee, VT, on October 9, 1950, son to the late Roger Southworth and Rose McFarlane.  He was raised by his father and step-mother Jane Bishop.   He grew up on Middlebrook Road in West Fairlee Center and attended the one room school house there.  He also attended Thetford Academy, Bradford Academy and Lyndon Institute.  After attending high school he served in the United States Marine Corps serving two tours in Vietnam.  Bill was a decorated Marine Corporal, and earned many service medals.  He was very proud of his country. He worked as a logger much of his life as well as doing carpentry and construction work.  He also trained in refrigeration and worked at CRREL in Hanover, NH.  On his birthday in 1980 he married Paula Cunningham and shared the past 38 years together, making their home in Vershire, VT, where they raised their family and later built a home in Corinth, VT.  Bill spent summers in St. Francis, Maine, where he had many close friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping there.  Bill was also an avid motor sports enthusiast and enjoyed truck pulling, racing, and riding motorcycles.   He also played softball.  He lived a full life.

He was a member and director of the Vermont Trappers Association, National Rifle Association, DAV & VFW.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Paula “Polly” Southworth of Corinth, his daughter: Katie Southworth and fiancé Mark Anthony Mattiace of E. Corinth, son: Patrick Southworth and wife, Jessica, of Vershire, VT, two grandchildren: Tanner and Owen Southworth, a sister Penny Adams and her husband Russell of Island Pond, brother in-law, Barry Ilsley, sister in-law, Vickie McFarlane, (and several cousins, nieces and nephews).

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Susan Ilsley and a brother, Nick McFarlane.

There will be no calling hours, service, or gathering, due to the family’s wishes. There will be a private burial at the Middlebrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made toward a college fund for Bill and Polly’s grandchildren.
