Shirley O'Connor of Clinton Ave. in St. Johnsbury died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015 at the age of 83.
She was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on Jan. 1, 1932, the youngest of six children born to Francis and Julia (Rowe) Minnicucci. She lived most of her adult life in Prospect, Ct. where she raised her family and became active in local politics. Shirley was a loyal Republican throughout her life and worked on many campaigns, both local and presidential, and on one occasion, earned special recognition from the President. She devoted her work life to improving the lives of others and supported a variety of charities. But family was most important to her, especially her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews by whom she will be sorely missed.
Shirley moved to St. Johnsbury in 2011 where she attended the church of St. John the Evangelist. Although her time in Vermont was brief, she grew to love her new home and became known by many for her sweet, friendly smile. Her family is grateful to all those who helped Shirley maintain her independence, especially her neighbors, her landlord, Dave and Mary Ann Baker, the hospital ER staff and the very compassionate officers of the St Johnsbury police department.
She is survived by four children: daughter Shaun O'Connor of Tucson, Arizona, daughter Jamie O'Connor and husband Stephen Genereaux of South Ryegate, son Robert O'Connor and wife Carol of Harwinton, Connecticut, and daughter Moira O'Connor of Panama Beach City, Florida; six grandchildren; Katie; Liam, Caleb, and Mairead; Julia and Kayla.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury this Friday, Dec, 4 at 11 a.m.
A family graveside service will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury, Connecticut on Tuesday, December 8th at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution to Umbrella, Inc at 1222 Main Street, Suite 301, St. Johnsbury VT 05819 or visit their website at www.umbrellanek.org.
