Sandra Ann Locklin, 78, of St. Johnsbury, Vt. passed away peacefully on July 30, 2024, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Sandra was born on Oct. 26, 1945, the third child and first daughter of Charles and Anita (Mosher) Cushman. She was born on the Cushman Farm on Bible Hill. Her dad was a little disappointed in having a daughter but after he realized what a hard worker she was on the family farm, he told her he should have had more daughters than sons.
Sandra was educated at the Center School, St. Johnsbury Middle School and Lyndon Institute. On June 30, 1962, she married the love of her life, Duane “Bucky” Locklin. Together they raised three children. Sandra was a homemaker. After her children were born and in school, she began working in the cafeteria in the St. Johnsbury School District so she could be home with her children when they were on vacation or had days off. She held other jobs, including a meat cutter, which she was very proud of. Sandra always put her children’s needs in front of her own. In her large family of nine children, she was the peacemaker. Sandra was not afraid to tell you what she was thinking.
Some knew her as Sandra, Sissy or Sis but her proudest names to be called were Mom or Grammy. She would do anything for her family. She was so happy when her grandchildren were born. When they each started walking, she would follow them around like a mother hen, making sure they did not fall and get hurt.
Sis was a great cook and is probably best known for her legendary chicken and biscuits. For the Super Bowl, she always made a handmade double crusted pizza for the lovers of the game. Sissy wasn’t much of a football fan but she would occasionally play the football pools at work. She would pick the winners by the team name she liked best. She actually won some pools picking this way, much to the chagrin of the football “experts” in her family. Sandra loved puzzles, flowers, bird watching from her kitchen and any wildlife she might see on Bible Hill.
Survivors include her children, Debbie Locklin, Shawn (Carrie) Locklin and Eric Locklin; grandchildren, Lucas Masure, Colton Masure and Danielle Locklin; Luke and Colton’s dad, Larry Masure; brother, George Cushman; sister, MaryJean (Jason Edmunds) Lawrence and Cindy (Terry) St. Francis; brother-in-law, Leslie Degreenia; sisters-in-law, Carol Ann Bowles and Alice Bean; a special niece, Shelly Smith, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bucky; her twin granddaughters, Danielle and Taylor Masure; her siblings, Charles (Pat) Cushman, James (Joyce) Cushman, Shirley Adrich, Jerry (Judy) Cushman, Ken Cushman and Norma Degreenia; her brother-in-law, Carol Bean; her sisters-in-law, Elaine (Paul) Petty, Irene (Murdo) Smith.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024, at the St. Johnsbury Center Cemetery with Barry Rock officiating. There will be no calling hours.
