Obituary: Ronald G. Sherburne

Ronald G. Sherburne, 86, of Lyndonville, passed away at his home on April 24, 2025.

Ron was born on November 5, 1938 in Lyndon to George and Bertha (Hudson) Sherburne. He attended Wheelock Grade School and Lyndon institute, graduating with the Class of 1958. Ron made the Shriner’s team for football and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame for track in 2021. He loved to reminisce and retell these stories.

After high school Ron took over a local automotive shop that became known as Sherburne Automotive. Ron married Gisele Sherburne (Riendeau) in 1962 and raised his family in Lyndonville. He spent much of his career as a machinist at Vermont Tap & Die where he worked until retirement. He married Helen (Surridge) Sherburne on January 15, 2005, recently celebrating 20 years of life together.

Ron was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed going to his hunting camp during deer season. He loved ice fishing and would go no matter how bad the weather was. When the weather was warmer, he could be found enjoying life at the Newark Golf Course, chasing the ball at his own pace. He also loved camping at Breezy Meadows Campground. He served as the director of maintenance for the Caledonia County Fair for 10 years and would have continued if not for his declining health. He spent his life in this community that was so important to him, and he will be missed by many who called him a good friend.

Ron is survived by his wife, Helen Sherburne of Lyndonville; children Michael (Jennifer) Sherburne of St. Johnsbury, Carroll (Cassy) Sherburne of Lyndonville, and Calean (Paul) Rhude of Contuit, MA; singlings Richard (Priscilla) Sherburne of S. Ryegate, Rosalie Wolfe of Foley, AL, and Raylene McCaffrey of Lyndon; as well as 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Bertha Sherburne; brothers-in-law Warren Wolfe and Patrick McCaffrey; sister Cheryl Fortin, and mother-in-law Lida Surridge.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 10am on May 12, 2025 at Sulphur Spring Cemetery in Wheelock. There will be no calling hours.
