Ralph Devereaux

Ralph B. Devereaux, longtime Lyndon area businessman, died Tuesday morning January 6, 2015 while at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Ctr. He was 73. He was born in Newport, VT on October 6, 1941 the son of Urbin and Louise (Pomeroy) Devereaux. An exceptional athlete, Ralph was a 1959 graduate of Lyndon Institute. He excelled in all sports and held many school and Vermont state records including high and low hurdles for track in 1958. He helped his track team to win three straight state track championships. He also was a member of the US Junior National Ski Team. Ralph was a prominent businessman owning many businesses in the Lyndon area including The Colonade Inn and Restaurant, Wayside Furniture, Caledonia Oil Co., Calgas Propane, Calmart Convenience Stores, and Northern Lumber Co. to name a few. He loved the outdoors and often traveled to ski, hunt, fish and explore. He had an adventurous spirit and was generous with his time and resources. Often taking trips to far off places like Costa Rica, Nepal, Africa, South America as well numerous trips to Canada and around the US to play in the outdoors. He often took family members and friends along to give them experiences that they would never have had and that they will remember forever. Survivors include three children, Chris Devereaux and his wife Kathy of Sutton, Brian Devereaux and his wife Sonia of Lyndon and Kristin Barany and her husband Robert of Danville; seven grandchildren, Irene and Ethan Devereaux, Makena Barker, Connor and Reese Barany, Brandi Strickler and Matthew Clark; his mother, Louise Devereaux of Lyndon, two sisters, Valorie Devereaux of Lyndon and Katherine Devereaux of British Columbia; and many good friends. A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday evening January 8 from 6-8 at the Guibord Funeral Home. Private committal services will be held at the Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton in the spring.
