Sheffield, VT: Phil A. DeGreenia, Sr., age 78, died unexpectedly in Staunton, VA, on October 25, 2023, while travelling to Florida.
Phil was born in Barton, VT, on October 3, 1945, son to the late Walter and Emma (Chamberlain) DeGreenia. He was raised and educated in Sheffield and lived there all his life. He worked in the woods for a number of years, at VT Tap & Die for 5 years and then Phil began his career working on the roads of Sheffield and Wheelock at different times, serving as road foreman. He held this position until an accident in 1996 forced him into retirement. He married Patricia Giroux on December 5, 1992, and would have celebrated 31 years. Phil was an outdoorsman and loved deer and rabbit hunting with his brother, Jason, and Gordon Phelps; the three of them were the “Three Musketeers.” He enjoyed working with cattle and his work horses, especially pulling, and for many years attended all the events at the fairgrounds. Phil had the biggest heart and would help anybody, anytime. He was known as the Tootsie Roll man in Sheffield, loved to talk about the old days and his family, which he spoke about often. He was very proud of them all.
He is survived by his loving wife, his “Hun” and “Babe”, Patricia, of Sheffield, 4 children: Tina DeGreenia Garand (Eric Williamson) of Sheffield, Phil DeGreenia, Jr., (Clarissa Rice) of Sheffield, Chad Hudson (Stephanie Squires) of Wheelock, Paul Hudson of Sylmar, CA, his siblings: Leslie DeGreenia (Pat) of Lancaster, NH, Georgia Newland (Harold) of Sheffield, Jason DeGreenia (Jossie) of Sheffield, 8 grandchildren: Anthony, Chris, Alicia, Phil, III, Emily, April, Thomas, Emma and Olivia, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Phil was predeceased by 3 brothers: Harold, Wallace and Lyle DeGreenia as well as his sister-in-law: Wanda Reed (Lyle’s wife), and his half-siblings: Grace Monfrette and Frank Kettle, and infant brothers: Ronnie and George, and 2 grandchildren: Jamie Garand and Paytin Lussier.
