Shelburne, VT: Pauline ‘Polly’ Handy, age 92, of Shelburne, VT, formerly of Pleasant Street in St. Johnsbury, VT, passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at Wake Robin Continuing Care Retirement Community in Shelburne, VT.
Pauline was born in West Danville, VT, on September 27, 1925, daughter to Edgar and Margaret (Lamora) Houghton. She was raised and educated in Danville graduating from Danville High School in 1943. Following high school, Pauline worked at St. Johnsbury Trucking until her marriage to Solomon ‘Sully’ Handy on November 3, 1947. They shared 40 years together until Sully’s death in 1987. Pauline worked at Hovey’s Shop as a Cashier for over 20 years. She was part of the Mother’s Club at Notre Dame Church as well as a Cub Scout Leader. She was very active at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury and a longtime volunteer at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital until moving to Shelburne. Pauline enjoyed golf, cross country skiing, and traveling around the world including a visit to the Vatican.
Pauline is survived by a son: Peter A. Handy and wife, Eileen, of Lecanto, FL; two daughters: Susan Kok and husband, Timothy, of Virginia Beach, VA, and Mary Jane Lawlor and husband, Robert, of Westhampton Beach, NY; 3 grandchildren: Ryan Lawlor, Courtney Handy, Whitney Handy, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband: Solomon Handy; a brother: Seldon Houghton; and a sister: Bernice Berry.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church on Friday May 18, 2018 at 11am followed by burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
