Paul Stephen Schartner, Sr., 75, of Calendar Brook Road in Burke passed away from natural causes on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at his daughter’s home in West Burke surrounded by his family.
He was born in Clinton, MA, on January 3, 1943, the son of the late Joseph Julius and Dorothy (Young) Schartner. He grew up in Massachusetts attending Emerson and Bolton grade schools and Hudson High School. Paul served in the U.S. Air Force and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed racing – especially going to the Oswego Raceway, camping, sailing, building trophies, spending time with his children, grand and great-grandchildren and coaching Lyndon Youth Baseball. He worked as a chef at the Rustic Restaurant after first coming to the area in 1971 but spent his working career as a truck driver, much of which was with Northern Gas Transport. He loved driving and “Papa Bear” was his CB Radio handle.
He is survived by 5 children, son: Dennis Morgan (Eleanor) of Brandon, VT; daughter: Lori Davis (Scott) of Burke; son: Paul Schartner, Jr. (Stephanie) of Lyndonville; son: Gerald “Jerry” Schartner (Joyce) of Lyndonville; daughter: Lisa Call (Robert) of Burke; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother: Karl Schartner of Weedsport, NY and many nieces and nephews.
Paul is predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, June (Hamm) Schartner; his son: Brian Schartner; sisters: Joan and Diane; a brother: Gerald and his parents.
Funeral services will take place at the Guibord Funeral Home on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:00am with John Sleeper officiating. A potluck reception will follow at the Lyndonville VFW on Hill Street at 12:30 following the service and all are welcome.
There will be no Calling Hours.
A committal service will take place at the Hillside Cemetery in Burke on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at 11:00AM for Paul, June and Brian. Military Honors will be observed for Paul at that time.
