Muriel J. Houghton, 93, of St. Mary Street in St. Johnsbury, VT passed away at The Pines in the loving presence of her family on Friday, August 10, 2018, after a period of declining health.
Muriel was born on November 10, 1924, in Hardwick, VT to Harry and Winona (Rowell) Jerome. She was raised and educated in Hardwick graduating from Hardwick Academy with the class of 1941. On September 19, 1942, Muriel married Cedric R. Houghton. They shared 52 years together until his death in 1995. Muriel worked as a bookkeeper in a private practice.
Muriel enjoyed golf, bowling, and flower gardening. Her passions were genealogy, sewing, crocheting and knitting. Her handy work is enjoyed by many family members and friends. She lived on Country Kitchen individually wrapped donuts. She was known by Mom, Nan, Nanny, Nanny Ho and Grammie H by her natural born family and the many she embraced and loved as her very own.
She is survived by her son: Lee Houghton and wife, Sylvia, of Lyndonville, formerly of St. Johnsbury; her grandchildren: Kristi Houghton and Todd LaBounty, and their son Noah, and Nikki Arnold and husband, Jason, and their sons, Logan and Easton; her sister-in-law Carolyn (Houghton) Caswell of E. Hartford, CT; her caretakers and special friends: Belinda and Gary Gibbs; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many very special adopted and embraced children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Muriel was preceded in death by her husband: Cedric; a son: Richard and his wife, Pamela; brothers: Howard and his wife, Blanche, and Bernard and his wife, Helen; and a sister: Helen Gilbert and her husband, Harold.
The family would like to thank the staff at Pines Health and Rehabilitation for their loving and excellent care of Muriel during her declining health.

A graveside service, officiated by Fr. Curtis Miller, will be held Saturday, August 18, 2018, 1:30PM at Village Cemetery on Elm Street in Cabot, VT.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Muriel’s name may be made to the Good Shepherd School, 121 Maple Street, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819
