Melvin Reed Hale, 86 of Danville, VT passed away from heart disease Thursday, February 4 at Dartmouth Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born May 31, 1929 in Williamstown, VT to Clyde Hale and Blanche Gilbert Hale.
Melvin was a simple man and he took each day at a time. His favorite saying was "well we'll see what tomorrow brings". He came from a large family with 13 siblings and lived through many years of tough times but he always had a good sense of humor and positive attitude. He went out in the work force at a very young age to help support the family. He would say he was a "jack of all trades but master of none" with a smile on his face. He was a farmer at heart working for the Kitchel & Whitehill families in Barnet, a truck driver for the Town of Barnet and VT Agency of Transportation finally retiring in November 2014 as an attendant at the Barnet Transfer Station. He loved his time working at the transfer station because he got to see his neighbors who shared all the town news and happenings. He had an excellent memory on the history of Barnet and loved to share it with his children. He loved to hunt and fish, and never missed an opportunity to tell anyone who would listen, a story about one of his adventures. His family was very important to him and he will be missed.
He is survived by his nine children: Linda Choate, Barnet, VT; Carolyn and Bob Bigelow, Barnet, VT; Melvin and Lana (Noyes) Hale, Grantham, NH; Donald and Debra (Buchanan) Hale, Burke Hollow, VT; Michael and Peggy (Vear) Hale, Barnet, VT; Timothy and Dianah (Parker) Hale, St. Johnsbury, VT; Thomas and Claire (Laperle) Hale, Concord, VT; Jeffrey and Carol (Dopp) Hale, Danville, VT; Debra Hale, Barnet, VT; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; three sisters Kay Shores, Lunenburg, VT; Gladys Fisher, Lyndonville, VT and Elaine Nunn, Barnet, VT. He was recently predeceased by his son-in-law James Choate of Barnet, VT.
The family would like to thank the medical staff at NVRH and Dartmouth Medical Center for the excellent care given to him in his final days. There will be no funeral services but the public is invited to a celebration of Melvin's life on Sunday, February 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge 1779, 2388 Portland St., St. Johnsbury, VT. Memorial contributions can be made at a charity of your choice.
