St. Johnsbury

St. Johnsbury, VT: Maxine S. King, age 80, of Gilman Ave, passed at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital Tuesday morning, January 28, 2025.

Maxine was born in Woodhull, NY on September 8, 1944, daughter to the late Lewis Cook Stewart and Virginia Eleanor (Clark) Stewart. She was raised on a dairy farm in Potter County, PA, graduated Valedictorian of her class from Northern Potter High School in Ulysses, PA with the Class of 1962. She went on to Mansfield College and got her Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching. She then became a French teacher and later a teachers’ aide for special education in Churchville, NY. She was very handy around the house, often taking on large remodeling and construction projects on her own. She often enjoyed many craft projects, as well, including crocheting and sewing. She loved both vegetable and flower gardening and watching the animals on her property, especially the deer, foxes and birds at the feeders. Maxine loved garage sales, country music, Zane Grey novels and westerns, with John Wayne being her absolute favorite. She had a beautiful voice and played the piano, often singing with family. Her family meant the world to her and Maxine was the central point of contact. She kept in touch with them all and all of them through her. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Maxine is survived by her daughter: Ginger Cossey of St. Johnsbury, her step-daughter: Karen Haskins and husband, Merle, also of St. Johnsbury, her 2 sisters and brother: Joyce Potter Treat of Elkland, PA, Crystal Brassington and husband, Steve, of Chesapeake, VA, John Stewart and wife, Gloria, of Churchville, NY, 8 grandchildren: Caleb Kittredge, Madison Gage, Riley Gage, Kaytlyn Morey, Emma Haskins and her husband Matthew Goodhind, Sophie Haskins, Eli Haskins, Alice Haskins, and her great-grandson Rowan Goodhind.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 37 years, Charles J. King in 2024; her son, Stewart Harold Gage, brother, James Stewart, and nephew, Matthew Stewart, also all in 2024; and her son-in-law, Patrick Cossey, in 2022.
