Mary Jo Scott, formerly of St. Albans and most recently of St. Johnsbury, passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 27, 2016 at the age of 72. She was known affectionately as ‘Mama Jo’.
Born in Evanston, Illinois on Nov. 1, 1943, Mary Jo graduated in 1961 from The Ellis School, a private girl’s academy, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She attended the University of New Hampshire and obtained her degree in education from Lyndon State College in 1965. Mary Jo spent 25 years teaching all subjects at the Vermont Department of Corrections. The Scotts resided in St. Albans for 35 years and had recently moved back to St. Johnsbury.
Mary Jo was an Olympic skiing hopeful in 1960 but decided not to go to Chile to train. She and Bruce met while skiing at Burke Mountain. As Chris says, “Thank God she met Bruce and decided to raise a family!” She continued to enjoy skiing principally at Burke Mountain and Smugglers Notch. She was instrumental in starting the ski clubs at both the University of New Hampshire and Lyndon State College.
She is survived by her husband Bruce whom she married May 22, 1964; three children: Christopher Scott of Westmore; Tonya Eastman, husband Greg and their children Chandler, Quinton, and Rochelle of Littleton N.H.; Gregory Scott of St. Albans; sister-in-law Jan Scott Adamec and her son Brian. She was predeceased by her brother Fred.
A gathering of friends and family will be held this Wednesday, June 1, at the St. Johnsbury Country Club from 3-5 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. the gathering will conclude with attendees encouraged to share their memories and stories.
Mary Jo had a soft heart for veterans in need. It would be fitting to consider sending a memorial contribution to “The Vermont Veterans Fund”, 118 State St., Montpelier VT 05620-4401.
Memories and condolences may be shared privately at www.saylesfh.com.
