Margaret "Maggie" Bacon

St. Johnsbury, VT: Margaret “Maggie” Bacon, age 90, of New Boston Road, died peacefully at her home Monday afternoon, September 16. 2024, in the loving care of her family.

Maggie was born in Alstead, NH, on May 10, 1934, a twin daughter of John and Nancy (Snide) Wright. She was raised and educated in Alstead, New Hampshire. Shortly after meeting the love of her life Romaine Bacon, they made a commitment to each other on June 29, 1954. Less than a decade later, they moved to the Northeast Kingdom, where they have called home ever since. Holding true to their wedding vows, they recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.

For many years, she touched the lives of children with her gentle nature and kindness at the St. J Center school where she cooked and cleaned. When the school closed, she moved on to her passion of sewing. She was a stitcher for various companies and worked at the Ames Department Store, making lifelong friends along the way. She worked in partnership with her husband in their own sewing and upholstery shop for several years where they worked side-by-side.

Anyone who knew “Maggie“ knew she had the heart of an angel, always giving of herself, her homemade crafts, and of course, making sure you were happy and fed. Throughout the years you would have found Maggie at the bowling alley, playing Bingo with family and friends, shopping, sharing her gift at craft fairs, or pulling the penny slots at the casino.

In their retirement, they were able to travel the country in their motorhome with countless friends from bowling tournaments (which there were many) or just for pleasure. They covered most US states, including Alaska and on into Canada. Until two years ago they considered themselves “snowbirds” wintering in Ellenton, Florida, where Maggie was quick to make friends and start sewing for them. Rather it be what they needed fixed, what they needed made, or just giving of her crafts.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Romaine, and their 4 children: Bradbury Bacon (Wendy) of St. J Center, Romaine “Jim” Bacon (Amy) of Concord, VT, Valinda Sileski (Paul) of Lowell, VT, Valerie Bacon (Tony Spicer) of St. Johnsbury, VT.

11 Grandchildren : Jonathan Bacon (Louise), Heidi Vance (Donny), Nickolas Bacon (Candace), Nancy Powers (Glenn), Kevin Bacon (Mami), Jason Reed, Joshua Bacon (Meagan), Holli Spicer, Isaac Bacon, Shane Bacon, Hannah Bacon.

15 Great-Grandchildren, 4 Great-Great-Grandchildren, and several beloved nieces and nephews.

All of whom she loved greatly, as family was Maggie’s greatest blessing

She was predeceased by her 5 siblings: Milton, Floyd and Norman Wright, her twin: Marjorie “Peggy” Allen and Helen Fullan.

Friends may call on the family from 6-8 PM on Monday, September 23rd at the Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury, VT.

A Graveside Service for all will be held on Tuesday, September 24th at 10:00 AM at the St. Johnsbury Center Cemetery with the Rev. Karl Hahr officiating. Gathering to follow at Alpine Valley Restaurant 1111 Main St Concord, VT.
