Maidene Morse Morton Whitney

Maidene Morse Morton Whitney, age 92, passed away Monday night September 26, 2016, following a long decline.
Maidene was born in East Hardwick, VT, on May 10, 1924, one of nine children born to the late Wilbur and Emma (Vancour) Morse. She had her first job at age 13 when she went to work for a family in East Concord doing house cleaning. She worked 7 days a week (including holidays) for $0.50 a week. She worked many years at Gilman Paper Company, in 1967 she went to work at the original Ames Department Store.
On November 15, 1941 she was married to Robert Morton. He predeceased her on May 18, 1966. Bob and Maidene raised 2 daughters in their marriage. In 1972 she married Harold Whitney and lived in St. Johnsbury Center at the Whitney homestead until Harold passed away on March 27, 2005. In 2011 she sold the home and went to live with her youngest daughter. She was able to pass in the home in Concord that she and Bob had raised their children.
Maidene was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Her life centered around her family. She was a woman who spoke her mind, you were never uncertain as to what she was getting across. She will be sadly missed by her loved ones, but she is now with the Lord and her family.
She is survived by her daughters: Joan Croteau (Paul) of St. Johnsbury and Diana Morton Gray of Concord; grandchildren: Paul Robert Croteau, Pamela Jean Billings, Jonathan Harold Croteau (Delora), Tammie Lynn Newland, and Theresa Newland; 7 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; sister Annabelle Sullivan; brother-in-law Harold Morton; sister-in-law Doris ‘Dot’ Morton and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters and their partners: Leon & Fannie Morse, Vernard Morse, Burliegh and Vera Morse, Katherine and Connie Pixley, Mary and James Grant, Robert and Irene Morse and Clement Sullivan.
A Private graveside service will take place at the St. Johnsbury Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
