Mrs. Lida Surridge, longtime Kirby resident, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 13, 2017 at the age of 103. She had resided at The Pines since May 2016.
She was born in Kirby, Vermont on Nov. 11, 1913, the daughter of Theodore and Alphonsine (Bedard) Croteau. Her husband George Surridge Sr. predeceased her in 1997; she was also predeceased by three children: Isabelle Noyes, Raymond Surridge, and George Surridge Jr., three brothers Robert, Paul, and Archie Croteau, and by two sisters: Eveline Santy and Helena Cushman.
Lida attended church primarily at St. Johns Church in St. Johnsbury but also at St. Elizabeths Church in Lyndonville. She was a member of the Kirby Quilters, the VFW Woman’s Auxiliary, and loved to play bingo.
She is survived by five of her eight children: Ethel Knapp of Danville, Betty Hudson and husband Erton of Ocklawaha, Florida, Helen Sherburne and husband Ronald of Lyndonville, Paul Surridge and friend Shirley Hand of Kirby, Diane Surridge of Ocklawaha, Florida; daughter-in-law Lucy Surridge of Danville; daughter in law Edna Surridge of Lunenburg; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Theresa Lesperance of Kirby.
Visiting hours will be held in St. Johnsbury at the Sayles Funeral Home this Thursday evening, Feb. 16, from 6-8 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Johnsbury this Friday, Feb. 17 at St. John the Evangelist Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be in May at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
