June Cahoon

June 11, 1927 — December 30, 2017

June P. Cahoon of Danville passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at NVRH in St. Johnsbury, from the aftereffects of a fall.

June Amy Parker was born June 11, 1927, in Titusville, Florida, the first daughter and first surviving offspring of C. Arthur Parker, and Lola (Hawkins) Parker, natives of the Northeast Kingdom, then resident in nearby Scottsmoor. In 1928, the family moved to a farm in Nassau, New York, then in 1933 to a farm in the Pumpkin Hill area of Danville.

She graduated from Danville High School in 1945 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Becker Junior College in Worcester, Massachusetts, graduating in 1947. In the summer of 1947, she married George D. Cahoon Jr. of Walden, and they made a home together for 70 years, first at her parents’ farm, then in a house they built themselves in 1954 just down the road.

Over the years she worked at Caledonia National Bank in Danville and as a dispatcher for the Vermont State Police in St. Johnsbury. Most of her working career, however, was spent in the insurance business; first for Impey Insurance Agency, then for Poulos Insurance, and lastly for Caledonia Insurance.

She was an active member of the Danville Congregational Church and served, for several years after her retirement, as church secretary. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star, Diamond Chapter No. 14, and served as Worthy Grand Matron, the top office in the Vermont O.E.S., in 1986.

She leaves behind her husband George; a sister, Ann Zatta and husband Leo of Tinton Falls, New Jersey; a brother, Leslie “Stub” Parker and wife Shirley of Lyndon; three sons: Scott of St. Johnsbury, Barry and partner Alicia Hingston of Danville, Myles and wife Merja of Fairfax; one grandson, Kevin Cahoon of South Burlington; and various nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son Keith of Oakland, California.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Congregational Church on Hill Street in Danville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to either Danville Rescue, 379 Brainard St., Danville VT 05828, or the Danville Congregational Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 56, Danville, VT 05828. There will be no calling hours.
