Josephine Barlow

Josephine “Jo” Barlow, age 95, of Lyndon Heights, passed away peacefully at the Pine Rehabilitation & Health Center in Lyndonville, VT, Saturday Morning, July 16, 2016.

Jo was born in Bethany, CT, on August 6, 1920, daughter to the late George Carl and Frances Alice (Strong) Schreyer.  She was raised and educated in Connecticut and attended school at the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven and later received an Associate’s Degree in Science during the 70’s.  In 1938, Jo married Paul Frederick Barlow making their home in Westport, CT sharing 31 years together when he died in 1969.  She was the School Lunch Director for the Town of Darien, CT for 13 years and for Westport, CT, for 27 years and also was the past President of the Connecticut School of Food Service Association. In 1990 Jo moved to Lyndonville and became very active in the First Congregational Church, was head of the Women’s Fellowship and helped provide countless meals at the church and for many other functions. Jo travelled for work and also in many other parts of the world for vacations including Russia, Puerto Rico, Italy to name a few. She truly enjoyed cooking, making crafts, embroidery, spending time with family and helping others.  Josephine was a “Can Do” type of person.

Survivors include a sister: Jane Ells of NY, daughter-in-law: Carol Barlow of West Burke,  4 grandchildren: Jennifer Hicks of San Antonio, TX, Catherine Andersson of SC, Sean Barlow of Sutton, VT, Paul Barlow and K of Sutton, VT and 8 great-grandchildren: Stacey, Erin, Krista, Peyton, Devin, Michaela, Lincoln, Aiden,  and 5 great-great grandchildren  and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son: Larry Barlow in 2002, daughter Judy Andersson (Tearsong) in 2013 and her siblings: George Schreyer (Ruth),  Carl Schreyer (Rita) & Henry Schreyer, Frances Studwell (George), Florence (George)Sterling and Jessie (Steve)Rappe.

A Service of Celebration will be held at the First Congregational Church at 10AM on September 17, 2016, with Rev. Judi Horgan officiating.  There will be no Calling Hours.

Memorial Donations may be made in Jo’s name to the First Congregational Church, PO Box 193, Lyndonville, VT 05851.
