Joan Roberta Croteau, age 72, died at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Monday, February 13, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones following a short period of declining health.
Joan was born in Concord Vermont, on April 9, 1944, daughter to the late Merton Robert and Maidene Elizabeth (Morse) Morton. She was raised and educated in Concord graduating from Concord High School with the Class of 1962. On November 2, 1963 she married Paul Edward Croteau and began a marriage and friendship lasting over 53 years. Throughout her life Joan worked at many local businesses: Val’s Restaurant and Cabins in her teen years, Ames Department Store, Shop n Save, Aldrich Formica, NVRH and then at JC Penney while living in Florida. When Joan and Paul returned to Vermont she opened Joan’s Daycare Center which would take off and become the next love of her life. She operated it from 1992-1996 at Tremont Street and then on Cherry Street from 1996-2002. Joan also enjoyed attending family events, making crafts, collecting dolls and cook books, and any good deal she could get at a yard sale or flea market.
She is survived by her beloved family. Her husband Paul E. Croteau of St. Johnsbury, her two sons, Paul R. Croteau of E. Concord, VT and his children: Christopher and wife Kristen, their kids: Hannah & Owen, Daniel and his son: Nicholas, SFC Jonathan H. Croteau and wife Delora, of St. Petersburg, FL and their children: Isabella and Olivia, daughter Pamela J Billings of Middlebury, VT and her children: Kathryn and Eli, Joan’s sister: Diana Gray of Concord, VT, and several cousins including one very close and dear: Betty Thrumston-Keasling of Pinellas Park, FL. Joan was predeceased by a granddaughter: Eliza Billings
Friends may call on the family from 6-8PM Friday, February 24, 2017 at the Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury.
A Celebration of Joan’s Life will take place at 11AM Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the funeral home. Please bring a story to share with family and friends about Joan to continue her memory. Following the service a reception will be held across the street at the Fr. Lively Center from 12-2 PM to continue with coffee and conversation for those attending and any additional guests to stop by.
Private interment will take place in the springtime at the Vermont Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, VT.
