Joan Bertolini of St. Johnsbury passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 23, 2016 at the age of 84, surrounded by members of her family.
Joan was born in Barre, Vermont on May 20, 1931, the daughter of Wendolyn and Freda (Hill) Beck. Her husband Enso "Bert" passed away two years ago on Jan. 1, 2014. Joan was predeceased by her sister Barbara, brothers Alan and Robert. Joan's surviving brother Norman Beck and his wife Tillie reside in Barre.
Joan was a graduate of Spaulding High School and Bryant College. Joan and Bert owned St. Johnsbury Beverage before retiring to Joes Pond in West Danville and Port Charlotte, Florida. After Bert's passing, Joan returned to Vermont full time. Spending Christmas on "The Pond" was one of Joan's dreams, and that dream came true last year. She remarked often that it is one of her most cherished memories.
Joan was a voracious reader and spent many hours at the Pope Library in Danville gathering new books, giving reviews, and making recommendations to the librarians there. In fact, the American Flag that is proudly flown over the library was a gift from her family.
Joan is survived by four children: Jim Bertolini of Williamstown, Kim Bertolini-Mier, her husband Roger, and their daughter Giovanina of St. Johnsbury; Scott Bertolini and his wife Tonia, their children Matt and Alicia Bertolini, Nate and Ashley Bertolini, and Daniel all of Michigan; Martin Bertolini and wife Kate of Joe's Pond, their children Dylan Bertolini and his partner Courtney Kozlowski of North Danville and daughter Lauren Dow and her husband Warren Dow of Barnet. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren McCoy, Lyla and Lola, along with many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Joan's life is being planned for later in the spring at Joes Pond; burial will be at the Hope Cemetery in Barre.
The family wishes to thank Hospice Nurse Carol and Dr. Mary Ready; everyone at Hospice knew how private a person Joan was and treated her with the upmost respect and dignity.
Memorial contributions can be made to The Pope Memorial Library, P.O. Box 260 Danville VT 05828 or marked for 'Hospice', 'Caledonia Home Health'161 Sherman Dr., St. Johnsbury VT 05819.
