Jane Harvey

Jane Harvey passed away at her home, at the age of 95, on February 16, 2018, surrounded and loved by her family.

Jane was born on Pond Hill in Lunenburg VT to Dora (Hardy) and Patrick Monahan on January 3, 1923.  She was raised in Guildhall, VT and Lancaster, NH with her siblings, Brother: Dick Monahan, and Sisters: Helen Newell (Robert), Mary (Roland) Buteau, Patricia (James) Pierce, Sally (Fredrick) Spaulding, and Betty Kelly, who all predeceased her.

Jane left for Washington D.C. after graduating from Lancaster Academy at 18 years old.  She worked in the Pentagon for the likes of General Julio and Col. George Patton.  She was at work during the Pearl Harbor attack, which she would reflect on every anniversary of that day.  While in Washington, she would meet her husband, a handsome marine named John Edward Harvey from Brooklyn, NY, whom she would marry on June 24, 1944.  They moved back to Vermont, where they both worked for Vermont Tap and Die until the birth of her son, John. Afterwards she began a journey as a successful business woman, first opening Harvey’s Dairy Bar in Lyndonville and later purchasing the Lyndon Motel, which she successfully ran for many years.

Jane was an Avid skier and hiker and very active in her church and community during the time she was raising her children in Lyndonville.  For many years she was a Girl Scout Leader, one of her favorite endeavors that she shared with her dear friend Diane Budde.  The stories of their adventures would bring her joy and laughter to her very last day with us.

There was no place more sacred to Jane than spending time with the family at the cabin, just across the pond from where she was born.  She helped her father build the cabin, along with her family.  She spent the best of her days there, surrounded by family and friends.  Even until the last year, she would sit on the porch, telling stories of days gone by on the lake.  She had one for every board of the camp.

Jane was a wonderful mother and matriarch of her family, not only to her own children, but to her nieces and nephews, taking them to camp on weekends and teaching them to drive and sew.  She loved them all.

Jane is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Ben McIntosh of Lyndonville, her grandson Benjamin, who was a wonderful caregiver in her final days, her grandsons: Erin (Paul) McIntosh of Rochester, MN, John Luke McIntosh of Lyndonville, VT, Matthew Harvey of East Burke, VT,  her granddaughter: Martha (Greg) Madler of Canonsburg, PA, her great-grandsons: Max, Ross and Sam Madler of PA, her special nieces: Kathy Paris and Cheryl Bona, who helped the family with her care and brought smiles to her face when they would stop by to see her, and her special friend: Jane Vars Waterman, who laughed and sang with her and watched “On Golden Pond” with her 361 times over the past few years.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son John, Daughter-in-law Rachel, her siblings and their spouses, and her nephew Bruce Spaulding, whom she all loved dearly.  She is now dancing, singing, and loving them on the shore of Neal Pond.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at St. Elizabeth’s Church on Hill Street in Lyndonville, VT.  There will be no Calling Hours.  Burial will take place in the summer at Calvary Cemetery in Lancaster, NH.
