Mrs. Grace Austin (nAC.e Lovejoy) of St. Johnsbury passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 at the age of 93, after spending 73 wonderful years with the love of her life, Delmer Austin, whom she married in 1942.
Born in 1922 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to John and Amelia (nAC.e Marlin) Lovejoy, she spent much of her youth in Lowell, Massachusetts and summers in East Haven, Vermont, where she met her husband in her early teens.
Many around Saint Johnsbury can remember Grace, always by her husband's side. Whether in their car where she sat right next to Del (as long as they could they bought cars that had a single front seat so she could be as close as possible), or during their daily stops to the local White Market where she and her husband not only shopped, but also stopped many a customer, where she engaged - even the less willing - in conversation focusing inevitably on her wonderful family and the pictures of them she carried with her wherever she went. Grace had a tender heart for the less fortunate and took in stray animals and stray people, giving her the well-earned title of grammy - which she willingly accepted - to many not her own whom she helped over the years. She donated often to the many charities she supported faithfully. In later years, Grace and Delmer spent their time between Vermont, South Carolina and Florida, where they loved to spend much of each winter with family. She was a devoted member of the Union Baptist church for over 60 years and had a true love for her Lord Jesus.
Grace leaves behind a beautiful legacy of family that was the fulcrum of her existence and her source of great joy: her husband Delmer of 73 years; their three daughters: Elaine Sanderson of Landrum, SC, Janice Ely of St. Johnsbury, and Kathleen Greenwood of North Lauderdale, FL; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, George and John Lovejoy Jr., and a sister Frances Nemetz.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 20 at 11 a.m. at the Union Baptist Church located at 932 US Route 5 south of St. Johnsbury. Burial will follow at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be directed to The Union Baptist Church Missions Funds, 932 US Rt. 5, Waterford VT 05819.
