Gordon 'Gordie' George

Gordon Robert “Gordie” George, 70, of Union Street in St. Johnsbury, VT, died unexpectedly at his camp in St. Johnsbury from an apparent heart attack Saturday morning, February 17, 2018.

Gordon was born in Hanover, NH on June 26, 1947, son to the late Gordon Ransom George and Mary (Smith). His father passed when Gordie was a year old and Mary later married Kenneth Dewing becoming the only father he ever knew.  Kenneth also predeceases him.

He grew up in St. Johnsbury and has been a lifelong resident, graduating from St. Johnsbury Trade School in 1965 and working for Fairbanks Scales for over 38 years.  He began in the print shop at Fairbanks and became a photographer which he enjoyed for many years.  He became an ICMP and later, a quality control inspector retiring in 2010.

Some of his hobbies included antiquing, tool collecting, genealogy, and motorcycling. Using only his chain saw, hand held tools, and the woods around him he built his log cabin with help from his step father Kenneth Dewing.  He was an avid lover of nature spending many of his days at his camp with the family dog Missy.

Gordie embraced his Native American heritage.  He participated in cultural ceremonies, and became an integral part of the Native American community, striving to exemplify and pass on the culture to future generations.

He is survived by his beloved family, his wife of 33 years: Teri (Metevier) George of St. Johnsbury, 3 daughters: Tracy Villeneuve, Nikia George, and Mira George, 4 grandchildren, his Aunt Helen, and cousin.

Friends may call on the family from 6-8PM on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury, VT.

A private Native American ceremony will be held by the family at a later date.
