Gene W. Redfield, of West Barnet, Vermont, died at home on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, after a brief, but brave battle with cancer.
Gene was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey, on October 15, 1947, the son of John W. Redfield and Pauline (Flocken) Redfield. He graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1966 and took some classes at Rowan University, in Glassboro, NJ, where he became interested in Horticulture.
Gene was president of his high school class for 3 years and his many friends loved his happy personality and winning smile. He always loved and was involved in sports. Growing up, his favorite pastime was playing sandlot baseball with all his buddies. In high school, he played both baseball and football, and was quarterback for the Bridgeton Bulldogs. It was in high school, where he met his future wife, Sandra Irelan, and they became best friends.
The Redfields lived in Pittsgrove, NJ, for 35 years, where Gene worked as a Lab Technician at Du Pont, in Deepwater, Delaware. During these years, they loved camping and hiking. Along with their son, Gino, they took a trip to Banff, Canada, where they rode horseback for 6 days through the Canadian Rockies. They also did a 6-day whitewater rafting trip down the Green River in Colorado. The Redfields hiked Mt. Washington several times, along with many other challenging climbs.
After his first visit to Vermont, Gene fell in love with this state and decided to retire here. Gene loved gardening and his beautiful yard showcased his great talent. He also had a creative eye for restoring furniture. The Redfields recently built “Relics Renewed,” where they began selling their renovated pieces, and had the opportunity to meet neighbors, as well as new friends.
Gene is survived by his wife and soul mate Sandi, of 49 years, son Gene “Gino” and soul mate, Karalyn, of Lititz, PA; daughter Linda Roy and husband Phil, of Nolensville, TN; much-loved grandsons Mitchell, Mason, and Ritter Redfield, of Marlboro, VT; brother-in-law Richard Irelan, of Hot Springs Village, AR; sister-in-law Nancy Irelan and husband Michael Schnelle, of Geneva, NY; and brother-in-law Ben Irelan and wife Peggy, of Landenberg, PA. He will be sadly missed by his 2 beloved rescued Golden Retrievers and 2 rescued kitties.
A celebration of Gene’s life will be held on his birthday, October 15, 2016, at the Andrew Hastie Barn in Peacham, VT, at 3:00 PM.
