Evelyn Mary (Lamothe) Hevey passed away on February 16, 2019 at the Pines Health and Rehabilitation in Lyndonville, Vt.
Born Feb. 9, 1920 to Napoleon and Mary (Libertie) Lamothe in Passumpsic, Vt. The third child of the family of eight. Evelyn grew up on the family farm across from Rt. 5 where the brick house and round barn were later demolished when the town of Barnet purchased the property. Evelyn was a student at the one room schoolhouse in Passumpsic with her brothers and sisters. She shared the memory of being so proud to be chosen to recite "The House With Nobody In It." at her 8th grade graduation.
She went to work at Maple Grove at the age of 17 when George Cary, the founder of the company, was at the helm. After a time she left to work temporarily for the family of Dr. Silverman in Boston, MA. She told of the train ride she took with her cousin Cecile Lamont. They left St. Johnsbury R.R. station at 3 p.m. and arrived in Boston at 7:30 p.m. It was a thrilling adventure for two girls as young as they were at the time.
She returned to Vermont when she was nineteen where she met and married Ernest Hevey on Aug. 13, 1940, at Notre Dame des Victoires Catholic church by Msgr. Dame. They had a son Robert, who was born at St. Johnsbury Hospital. After his graduation from St. Johnsbury Academy, she returned to work at Maple Grove and continued to work there under the new management of Whaley Bros. and later under Bill Callahan. She helped management with the Canadian business serving as an interpreter for the French business until her retirement in 1990.
Evelyn and Ernest purchased their home on Clarks Ave. in St Johnsbury from Walter Guyer and later after it was destroyed in a fire, rebuilt the house that she called Home since 1948.
The Heveys were communicants at St. John's church. Evelyn was a member of the daughters of lsabella Alter Society, St. Gabrielle's mother club and the ladies of Ste. Anne.
She is survived by her son Robert and his wife, Debra; Grandchildren Craig Hevey and Robin Davis; and her great-grandchildren Brandy and Casey Davis.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest, her brothers: Gerard, Camille, Reginal, and George Lamothe; and by her sisters: Yvette Morey, Irene Mooney and Germaine Lang.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at St. John’s Church on Winter Street in St. Johnsbury, VT.
Burial will be in the spring on May 22, 2019, 10AM at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Johns Street, St. Johnsbury, VT.
