St. Johnsbury, VT: Evangeline Ellen “Vangie” Guertin, 95, died Tuesday morning, March 4, 2025, at Country Villages in Lancaster, NH, where she had resided the past year.
Vangie was born in Orleans, VT, on April 8, 1929, daughter to the late Richard Grant and Lila Mae (Ball) and grew up in Danville working on the family farm as well as neighboring farms and ran a team of horses at the age of 6! She married Ronald R. Guertin on June 29, 1946, and shared 34 years at the time of his passing on September 4, 1980. Vangie worked for the telephone company for 4 years and then 21 years at St. Johnsbury Convalescence, with18 years of that time in the laundry where she could be her own boss. She was a caregiver for “Chick” Houde and for Armand Campbell and volunteered at the St. Johnsbury Meal Site for 16 years. Vangie lived at the St. Johnsbury House for over 20 years and was a communicant of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church. She wintered in Florida for several years and loved taking long trips, one of which included 2 months of RV’ing with her daughter and son-in-law, Claire and Ron, across the country.
She is survived by her son: Reginald R. Guertin and his wife, Josephine, of Danville, VT and Shiner, TX, Claire L. Hooker and her husband, Ronald, of St. Johnsbury, 10 grandchildren: Rodney, Sarah, Krista, Kyle, Daniel, Christina, Brett, Devin, Jeff, Robert, 20 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her mother: Lila Mae Bowen, her father: Richard Grant, her sisters: Hazel Bowen and Clarabell Day, her brother: Donald F. Bowen, her beloved son: Michael Guertin on June 21, 1995, and her granddaughter: Allison Guertin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM on Friday, March 14, 2025, at St. John’s Church in St. Johnsbury. Burial will take place in the spring at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Johnsbury.
Visitation will take place from 2-5 PM on Thursday March 13th at the Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury.
