Ernest Kent, age 93, of St. Johnsbury, passed away at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, VT, on July 5, 2016, after ten years of care at his home by his daughter.
Born in London, England, on August 9, 1922, to Alfred and Frances (Mepham) Kent, he became a champion swimmer in school. Having a great voice, he sang in several choirs, some of which were attended by the British Royal Family. His musical talents extended to the piano and multiple wind instruments, which he perfected performing in several military bands. When WWII was declared in 1939, he had already joined the British Army. After surviving the Battle at Dunkirk, he fought in multiple countries including India, Libya and Italy and received multiple rows of battle ribbons for his service.
In Scotland, he married Sarah Kidd, raised his daughter, and became a detective, photographer and fingerprint specialist in the Criminal Investigation Department, until 1965 when they emigrated and began a new life in Connecticut. There he worked for Hubbell Corp. and summered in the North East Kingdom for years until retiring to St. Johnsbury. He loved fishing, hunting and gardening, and was a fabulous cook.
He is survived by his daughter: Rosina Greenwood and her husband, Larry, of St. Johnsbury, and a grandson: Philip Greenwood and his wife, Erica, of Essex Jct., VT. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sarah, and two brothers: Stanley and Arthur Kent.
There will be no Calling Hours. A private service will take place at the Barnet Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
