Elsie H. Finney of St. Johnsbury passed away Monday, March 7, 2016. She was born June 4, 1931 in St. Johnsbury, VT, the daughter of E. Lloyd McKee and Margaret (Beattie) McKee. She attended public schools in St. J. and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1949. She attended Bay Path Junior College in Longmeadow, Mass.
Mom was all about family. Be it in the U.S. or Canada, her parents, aunts and uncles, sons and step-daughters, nieces and nephews, grandson and granddaughters she always went out her way to make contact and be part of their lives. She would forever send cards for every occasion to let you know she was thinking of you.
Elsie was a true Vermonter. She loved her hometown of St. J. and her home state of Vermont. Elsie would follow and root for the home team in all sporting events. She thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon drive to see the fall foliage in the Vermont countryside. Elsie especially liked the "sugaring" season. She so looked forward to fresh maple syrup with raised donuts and any sugar on snow gathering she could get to.
Elsie was the consummate humanitarian. Whether it was taking care of her residents at Sunset Home or running errands, cooking a meal, or caring for family, neighbors and friends she was always willing to help.

She continued to work for Dr. Hawkins until 1990. She then became manager of Sunset Home, an assisted living care facility in St. J, until her retirement in 1996. She continued to serve on the ladies board of directors of Sunset Home until she left St. J in 1998.
Elsie was married to George D. Dezell in 1951 and they had two sons. Craig Dezell of Greensboro, VT and Eric Dezell of St. Johnsbury, VT. In June of 1998 she married E. Dean Finney, formerly of St. J, moved to Virginia and then Dean and her moved back for good to St. Johnsbury in 2005.
She had been a dedicated member of the North Congregational Church since 1944 serving as Deacon, Treasurer of Missions for over 30 years and as a member of the Business Stewardship and Missions Committees and Executive Council. She was church group leader for many years. She served as chairperson for many United Workers Standing Committees as well as its President. Elsie also served on the St. J Clothing Center Board of Directors representing North Church until its closing in 1998. Elsie was most appreciative and proud when she was designated as Deacon Emeritus for her long time and dedicated service to her beloved church.
