Edwina Berkman

Edwina Serena (Anderson) Berkman, age 76, of Hardwick, VT, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, after a period of failing health.

Edwina was born in Peekskill, NY on June 21, 1941, daughter to Edward Charles and Pauline Louise (Foster) Anderson.  She was raised in Peekskill and the Bronx graduating high school in 1958.  She attended Hunter College and received an Associate Degree in Creative Writing from Suffolk Community College where she also taught for a time. On June 21, 1959, Edwina married Arthur Edward Berkman, Sr.  They shared 46 years together until Arthur’s death in 2005, living on Long Island for a time, in Bokeelia, Florida for 18 years and finally settling in the Northeast Kingdom in 2002.

Edwina was very enthusiastic, intelligent, and was always learning. She undertook a great number of learning opportunities – she worked as an insurance agent and drove school bus in New York; she reupholstered furniture; she made faux fur coats; she cooked; she taught adult ed classes in creative writing and journalism; she worked as an investigative journalist and had her own newspaper column; and she authored books under the pen name Dana Reed.

She is survived by her three children, a son: Arthur Berkman, Jr and Justine of Galena, OH; two daughters: Pauline Nevins and Raymond of (Shirley, NY or Newark, DE) and Laura Berkman and Cindy Koutny of Hardwick, VT; 3 grandchildren: Dana Rae, Danielle Kayla, and Raymond Edward Nevins of Shirley, NY; 3 great-grandchildren: Alaina Rae and Annabelle Faith Manuel, and Raymond Alexander Nevins.

Edwina was predeceased by her husband: Arthur Berkman, Sr. in 2005; and a son: John Berkman in 1988.
