Douglas Patten Steward, II, age 64, of Lupine Hill Drive in Lyndon, passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, Tuesday morning, February 28, 2017, surrounded by his beloved family following a very recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
Douglas was born in Medford, MA, on December 30, 1952, son to Katherine Enid (Purves) and the late David Alan Steward and was named after his paternal grandfather. His family was in the hospitality business, which allowed him to live in Israel, England, Pittsburgh and Minnesota as a child, with the latter finally being home to his youth. He graduated from Orono High School in Minnesota, the Class of 1971. He attended Pratt Institute and received his BA from City College of New York in Medieval & Renaissance History. He researched genealogy as an enduring and beloved hobby for more than 40 years. Doug embraced his Scottish heritage, from Highland Games, military re-enactments and enjoyed haggis, much to the dismay of those sitting across from him. He was described by many as being a warm and gentle man, one who not only loved to cook but enjoyed bringing people together for family gatherings and dinners. If he could bring friends and family to the dinner table and make them smile, he considered his job a success. He was a true chef at heart and carried that into his career, where he was Executive Chef at the Burke Mountain Academy.
Many of his loves and hobbies included architecture, world music, gardening, collecting Israeli stamps and photography. Doug was considered a man from another era, in that he could do or make due with whatever was at hand. He shall be truly and dearly missed.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Darcie McCann of Lyndon, his mother: Katherine E. Steward of Minneapolis, MN, his daughter: Katherine “Kate” L. Steward (Aaron Gingras) of Waterbury, VT, his son: Kieran A. Steward of Lyndon, his sister: Alison “Lissa” Steward of Minneapolis, and a legion of sisters & brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, including a special dog & cat: Belleau & Puck.
Services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Lyndonville Congregational Church on Middle Street with the Rev. Judi Horgan officiating. Interment will take place privately at a later date.
Friends may call on the family from 6-8PM Friday March 3rd at the Guibord Funeral Home at the corner of Center and Main in Lyndonville, VT.
