Douglas Lyons

Douglas Crawford Lyons, age 82, of Marshall Newland Road, passed away at his home, Tuesday evening, March 8th, 2016, with his family by his side after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Doug was born in Cambridge, MA, on August 4, 1933, son to the late Kevin T. and Edith (Hutchins) Lyons. He was raised and educated in Auburndale, MA, graduating from Brown & Nichols in the class of 1951. He matriculated to Princeton University, graduating Cum Laude from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs in 1955. Doug then served two years in the U.S. Army stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was awarded sharp shooter honors and worked as a radio operator. In 1960 he married Diane Brackett and shared 55 years together. They made their home in Concord then Groton, MA. He worked as a Bond Trader for Weeden & CO., and was later Vice President of Municipal Bond Sales at Smith Barney, when he retired in 1987. Doug designed and built his vacation home in East Burke, VT in 1971, and made the move permanently to the Northeast Kingdom in 1988.
Douglas enjoyed an eclectic array of hobbies and passions. Often he would be seen doting on his daughter "Joaner" as he chauffeured her to-and-fro their favorite local stops, maintaining equal patronage at both the Northeast Kingdom Store and the East Burke Market for afternoon coffee. Doug escorted his wife Diane and Joan to Saturday afternoon masses at St. Elizabeth's Church, faithfully occupying the same pew, in the second-to-last row. And almost without fail, Doug would prepare an evening repast for guests and family, meeting the gourmet standards of Fanny Farmer and Julia Childs. The experience was only further enhanced by the full-flavor provender from his various gardens to rival Provence.
Doug's recreational activities varied from decades long membership in the 1st Run Club at Burke Mountain, to "snapping his brutish forearms" as he drove golf balls lofty distances at Orleans Country club with cohorts Gator, Ford, and Fred. And of course there were his near daily forays onto the serpentine paths he carved into the woods near his perch overlooking the mountains. Evenings were spent in his "Patton Room" pouring through dense tomes from his extensive military history library.
Douglas will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, his fellow parishioners and all fortunate enough to gather round his Table of Plenty. It should also be noted that Douglas was an honorary member of the St. Elizabeth's Women's Group. His presence and his gourmet dishes will be sorely missed at their functions.
Doug is survived by his beloved bride Diane, of East Burke, his son: Crawford Lyons (Lynn) of Concord, NH, three daughters: Jennifer R. Lyons (John Campbell) of Sun Valley, ID, Joan Lyons of East Burke, NoA�l Lyons of Brookline, MA, two sisters: Deborah Beach of Bangor, ME, Jean Chandler of Lebanon, NH, 5 grandchildren: Ross, Ryon and Jasmine Campbell, Zed and Bracket Lyons and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Kevin Lyons and sister Anne Lyons.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Church on High Street in Lyndonville, VT, with Rev. Fr. Chris Micale as celebrant.
Burial will take place at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Lyndonville, VT, on June 10, 2016 at 4pm.
Friends may call on the family from 6-8PM on Friday evening March 18th at the Guibord Funeral Home located at the Corners of Main and Center Streets, in Lyndonville.
