Doris K. Damon of Spring Street, St. Johnsbury, passed away in the comfort of her home on the evening of June 30, 2016, at the age of 89. She was the beloved wife of Roger H. Damon Jr.; they celebrated 65 years of marriage on April 21, 2016.
She was born in Hempstead on Long Island, New York, on March 21, 1927, the daughter of Harold and Catherine (Griffiths) Jensen. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1945, attended Pratt Institute, later working for McGraw Hill Publishing in New York City.
In addition to being a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, Doris was a long term member of the choir of Grace United Methodist Church and was involved in many church activities. She was the Girl Scout Troop Leader for her three daughters’ troops for thirteen years, creating unmatched opportunities for all the girls in her troops. Doris also proudly achieved Co-pilot “Pinch Hitter” certification, taking ground school classes and assisting Roger during the many years Roger piloted their plane. Doris enjoyed hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing with her family and friends, most notably the long standing (46 years) Sunday afternoon “Snowshoe Group,” and was the first adult female member of the Burke Mountain Ski Patrol. She excelled at sewing and needlecrafts; knitting sweaters and sewing scores of dresses for herself and her daughters over the years. Her many friends and neighbors looked forward to her holiday cookie deliveries. Christmas was a very special time of year for Doris, celebrating the foundation of her faith and looking forward to baking many cookies – often well in excess of 1200 each holiday season.
Travelling alone to Salzburg, Austria in 1952 to join her husband Roger planted the seeds for a life-long love of traveling. She and Roger visited Hawaii, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and Europe, as well as many areas of the U.S. and Canada. Doris adored the freedom of bicycle riding – beginning in the streets of her home town, and then throughout New England with Roger. This expanded to Nova Scotia, Ontario, Virginia, the Puget Sound area, and a month long bicycle adventure through Denmark.
Doris is survived by her husband, Roger H. Damon Jr. of St. Johnsbury, her three daughters: Katherine Izquierdo and her husband Casimiro of Chantilly VA, Linda Damon of Shelburne VT, and Amy Grover and her husband Timothy of Bolton VT, her two sisters; Joan Jernegan and husband Tom of Bothell, WA, Betty Arigoni and husband Frank of Spring Hill, FL, four grandchildren; Gabriela and Casey Izquierdo, and Ted and Miranda Grover, her niece Karen Garrett and husband Dale of Snohomish WA, and nephews Jason Arigoni, wife Lina, and daughter Gigi, of Atlanta GA, and Brandon Arigoni and son Austin, of Brooksville Fl.
The family will observe their services privately.
Memorial gifts may be offered to Northeast Kingdom Home Care (PO Box 250, Newport, VT 05855), or St. Johnsbury Home Health Care and Hospice (161 Sherman Drive, St. Johnsbury 05819). These two organizations and their wonderful caring staff members enabled Doris to stay in her own home, comfortable and surrounded by love, for which the family is extremely grateful.
