Donald Showalter

Donald A. Showalter passed away peacefully on September 22, 2017 at his home in Kirby at the age of 76. He was born in Hudson, New York on June 10, 1941. His parents were Bernard James Showalter and Mildred Tetlock Showalter. They moved to Troy, New York where Don grew up and attended schools there and graduated from Troy High School.

He joined the United States Air Force upon graduation from High School. He served overseas in Japan and the Phillipines as a flight engineer. He spent his leisure time during the service visiting Buddist  temples in Japan.

He was employed by Montgomery Ward in various positions with some travel involved. He was an entrepreneur in Lincoln-Woodstock, New Hampshire managing condominium associations for several years. He moved to Kirby, Vermont and was hired by various towns in Caledonia County to write town plans. He became very involved with the towns’ zoning by-laws and planning commissions. He was later employed by Woodworker’s Warehouse as a store manager in St. Johnsbury, Plattsburgh, New York, and Montpelier, Vermont. His last employment was in Montpelier with Spooner Specialties until his retirement. After his retirement he moved back to Kirby with his life partner Cheryl Pare and did some travelling.

He is survived by his life partner, Cheryl Pare, a son, Donald Showalter, Jr. and a daughter, Cathy Showalter along with extended family and close friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Mildred Showalter.

There will be calling hours at Guibord Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Lyndonville, Vermont on October 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
