David Smith

David Hathaway Smith, age 72, of Calendar Brook Road in Sutton, VT, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center.

David is survived by his beloved mother: MaryJane H. Smith of West Fairlee, VT; his dear aunt: Della Smith of Post Mills, VT; sister: Beverly Belanger and husband, Lucien, of Sutton, VT; nephews: Michael Belanger and wife, Donna, of Lyman, NH, Robert Belanger and wife, Kelly, of Sutton, VT, and William Belanger and wife, Bobbie Jo, also of Sutton; great niece: Cassidy Belanger and companion Derek Mercury of South Hero, VT; great nephew: Brandon Belanger and fiancée, Cate Barrows, of Sutton, and Blake Belanger of Sutton; great-great-nephew: Lukas Belanger of Sutton VT; Special cousin: Judith Smith Adams of Post Mills VT; and many other cousins.

He was predeceased by his father: Eugene Sheldon Smith.

David grew up on Lake Fairlee, VT and was a 1963 graduate of Thetford Academy.

He later attended Concord Commercial College prior to serving in the US Army in 1967-1970

David joined his sister and brother in-law on their BEV-N-LOU dairy farm in 1970 where he took special pride in haying, sugaring and cutting wood. He continued to work with them until presently. For many years he spent the winter plowing neighbor’s driveways in Caledonia County.

David was an avid deer hunter and thoroughly enjoyed returning to his childhood home in West Fairlee Center, to spend the weeks of deer season in the company of his Mother, family and friends.   He kept a trout pond and enjoyed giving away vegetables from his huge garden. David gathered acorns during deer season, sprouted them in his refrigerator, and planted the oak seedlings in the spring. He loved the outdoors, taking countless photos of wildlife, trees, flowers, and insects. Since a very young age he enjoyed collecting and researching coins and stamps.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 10:00am, at the West Fairlee Center Church in West Fairlee, VT, with burial to follow immediately at the West Fairlee Cemetery on Middlebrook Road in West Fairlee.
