Charles Donald Metevier
1926-2017
St. Johnsbury, Vermont
Charles Donald Metevier, age 90, of Barley Road in Burlington and formerly of Lynwood Terrace in St. Johnsbury, passed away peacefully in his sleep following an unexpected decline in health at the UVM Medical Center on January 21, 2017.
Charles was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, on August 1, 1926, son to the late Charles A. and Florence (Roy) Metevier. He was raised and educated here; graduating from St. J. Academy when he returned from the US Army in Germany during WWII. He married the former Barbara May Ainsworth on Thanksgiving Day in 1950 at St. Aloysius Church, sharing nearly 64 years at the time of her passing on October 31, 2014. He worked as a salesman and truck driver for HP Hood and then Lotta Rock Ice Cream for nearly 40 years, combined. He was later a school bus driver for the Concord School District.
He and Barbara enjoyed dancing. He had a distinctive tenor singing voice; was a member of a Barber Shop Quartet out of St. Johnsbury; and a past member and actor with the St. J. Players. He was a very hard worker who also enjoyed woodworking. Growing up during the depression he was very frugal, using unique and rustic methods of repair; thereby being known as "McGyver" around the house. He was a longtime member of St. John the Evangelist Church.
He is survived by his two daughters: Teri George and her husband, Gordon, of St. Johnsbury, Lisa Metevier and her husband, Doug Vachereau, of Burlington; his brother: George Metevier of Bricktown, NJ; 5 grandchildren: Erinn Blodgett and her husband, Mike, of Lyndonville, Maurice LeMay and his wife, Patty, of NY, Amanda Taylor and her husband, Scott, of Woodbury, Nikia George, Mira George both of St. Johnsbury; 6 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter: Lorraine Ainsworth, his 3 sisters: Rita MacPherson, Evelyn and Elaine Rolfe; and a great-grandchild.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11AM on Friday, January 27, 2017, at St. John the Evangelist Church, on Winter Street in St. Johnsbury. Burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in the springtime.
Friends may call on the family from 6-8PM on Thursday evening the 26th at the Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury.
