Charles Longchamps

1953-2024

Charles (Chuck) W. Longchamps, age 70, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on July 2, 2024.

Chuck was born in Barre Vermont – but lived most of his life in Burke Hollow in the family home. Anyone who knew Chuck, knew that the door was always open. And, if you walked in and heard, “What do you want?” you knew you were in the right place. You might also hear, “I don’t even like you!” or, “Who let you in?” But, no matter what he said, he smiled, and you knew you were welcome.

His wife, Susan (Sue) would be right there with him to greet you. Chuck met Sue when they were in fifth grade. Little did either of them know, they would eventually be married for over 47 years.

After finishing some college, Chuck began his career as a Class A Painter. He loved to learn and happily absorbed correspondence courses and taught himself engineering. He moved on to Newport Plastics where he was quickly promoted to Supervisor. During Chuck’s time there, he helped design, and then create many prototypes including: the first mold for Disney’s log ride, fiberglass interiors for airliners, and the shell for advanced medical imaging equipment - just to name a few. He remained interested in engineering and electronics throughout his life.

While Chuck worked days as a Supervisor – he also had a passion for music. As the drummer and singer for the Green Mountain Band, Chuck and the boys were local favorites playing all over the Northeast Kingdom for more than 20 years.

He and Sue also shared a love of motorcycles. Chuck started out young, with a Honda he secretly built piece by piece in his attic (his parents didn’t approve), then graduated to a Harley, and later in life advanced to an Indian that he and Sue could ride together.

Chuck and Sue never had any children, but they always had pets that were near and dear to their hearts. Everyone who knew Chuck knew he loved his dogs and treated each one like family.

Chuck is survived by his older brother Rick Longchamps (Jane), and his younger siblings, Roddy Jablonski (Connie), Rhonda Hodsdon (Bruce), and Michelle Mains (Michael). He is predeceased by his Mother Bette (Jabby) Jablonski and his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Longchamps, as well as his brothers, David Longchamps and Michael Jablonski. Chuck and his brother Roddy had an especially tight bond, spending countless hours debating politics, disagreeing on almost everything, and spending time in Chuck’s workshop tinkering. His sisters Michelle and Rhonda also had a special place in his heart.

In Chuck’s last months, friends and family came by to be with him almost every day. It was a constant reminder of how many people liked him, loved him and will miss him dearly. Chuck leaves behind lifelong neighbors, family, friends, and the love of his life, Sue.

A memorial for Chuck will be announced at a later date. In the meantime, in place of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Chuck’s name to any of the following organizations:
