Betty Ann Hunt Carr, daughter of the late Stanley E. Hunt and Natalie Harvey Hunt, passed away peacefully on Thursday June 6, 2024 at The Pines in Lyndonville, VT. She was 93 years old and had lived a long and joy filled life.
Born October 23, 1930 in Laconia, New Hampshire, her early years were spent mostly in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. There she discovered her life-long love of reading and she enjoyed many visits to the Fairbanks Museum. As a child, Betty also took many summer trips to New Hampshire to visit her grandmother in Hillsboro and her aunt in Chocorua, where she was taught the art of dressmaking. A 1947 graduate of Laconia High School, she attended Radcliffe College in Boston for several years before establishing Stagecraft Studios and becoming a costume designer for the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts and later for the Cleveland Playhouse in Ohio.
After relocating to Los Angeles in the mid-50s, she became a stewardess for Western Airlines, where she flew over a million miles in non-jet airplanes. She also continued her education at UCLA. Eventually she relocated to Northern California where she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature at UC Berkeley and met and married Robert H. Carr. Betty continued her education, earning her Masters Degree in Library Science at Drexel University in Delaware. She worked at several libraries including the Shasta Public Library in Redding, California and the Carpenter Memorial Library in Manchester, NH where she was a reference librarian retiring in 1992.
After retirement she moved back to Vermont and found her calling at being a companion and caregiver for many years. Betty loved to take road trips to visit historic sites and to visit family and friends. She found the joy of singing at an early age in NH and continued throughout her life singing in various groups. Betty belonged to the American Association of University Women and Molly Stark Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in NH.
She is survived by her sister, Diana Hunt Duckoff, brother-in-law Arthur “Skip” Johnson, sister-in-law Olivia Hunt, nephew Craig Beekman (Carla), niece Carole Beekman (Steve Aguilar), nephew William Hunt (Yvonne), nephew Matthew Hunt (Pamela), nephew Stanley Hunt (Candace), nephew David Johnson (Tiffany), nephew Edward Johnson (Ann), nephew William Johnson (Cathy) and many grand and great-grand-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cousins, Priscilla Weston and Nancy Harvey, her special library friend Carol Thomas, and her Vermont friends Susan Chandler, Jeffrey Pratt and Daphne Hsieh.
