Bernice L. Stahler, age 87, of the Canterbury Inn passed away peacefully on January 11, 2017, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital after a long illness.
She was born in Kinnears Mills, Quebec Canada to Ernest and Annie (Mathers) Légaré on August 3, 1929. She attended schools in Kinnears Mills and Thetford Mines. While growing up, her cousin, Viola Mathers, was the sister she never had. Both came to Vermont to visit relatives and Bernice stayed while Viola returned to Canada. They kept a long friendship of more than fifty years. She married Francis Stahler on June 2, 1947, and they had four children. She was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lyndonville, VT. Bernice worked for many years at Shop-n-Save in St. Johnsbury and Lyndonville. Following her retirement she volunteered at NVRH hospital and since she was a people person, she loved every bit of it.
She is survived by Dwayne Stahler and wife, Mildred, of Nashville, TN, Dwight Stahler and wife, Tammi, of Lyndonville, Dawn Leroux and husband, Steve, of Passumpsic, three grandchildren: Nicholas Stahler, Joshua and Jade Leroux as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bernice was predeceased by her mother, Annie in 1991, husband Francis in 1992 and her son Doug in 1984.
Calling hours will be held from 1-3PM on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Guibord Funeral Home, corner of Center and Main Streets in Lyndonville. A prayer service led by John Sleeper will conclude the afternoon.
Graveside Services will be held in the Spring at the Lyndon Center Cemetery.
