Alice Moore

Alice Winnifred Cass Moore, age 98, went peacefully to her final resting place after a long illness, on July 29, 2017. She resided at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, Vermont.

She was born November 24, 1918 in Chesterville, Ontario Canada, the daughter of George Reddick Cass and Florence Idella Johnston Cass. She graduated from Chesterville High School where she met Donald Glenn Moore, an American whose father had been transferred from the Boston & Maine Railroad in Fairlee, Vermont to the Canadian Pacific Railroad in Chesterville. After graduation from Chesterville High School, she entered the Cornwall (Ontario) General Hospital Training School for Nurses. She interrupted her nurse's training and married Donald on July 2, 1941 in Alburgh, Vermont, on their way to Fairlee to stay with his family. They were married for sixty-six years until Donald's death in 2007.  They lived in Boise, Idaho from 1942 to 1945 while Donald was a flight instructor at McGowen Field during WWII. They moved to St. Johnsbury, Vermont in 1945.

Alice became a naturalized American citizen in 1954.  She worked part-time as a private nurse. In the early 1960's she elected to finish her nurse's training and was accepted at the Cornwall General Hospital Training School for Nurses. Upon getting her RN degree, she became employed at Brightlook Hospital in St. Johnsbury as an Operating Room nurse and later worked at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital as second floor head nurse. She retired from nursing in 1983.   She was a proficient golfer at the St. Johnsbury Country Club. She also took up skiing but admitted she never did it well. She enjoyed hiking with family and friends. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Seed and Weed Club. In her spare time she enjoyed doing crafts, gardening and raising her children in a loving home. She was very devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald and her daughter, Constance “Connie” Jane Moore Beliveau.

She is survived by her son, Leslie Colin Moore of Newtown, Pennsylvania and her daughter, Karen Heather (Leavitt) Moore of Kirby, Vermont.  Survivors include eight grandchildren; James Alexander Moore, William Jeremy Moore, David Leslie Moore, Heather Leigh Leavitt, Michelle Lise Beliveau Monroe, Denise Carin Beliveau Smith, Chantal Louise Beliveau, and Lia Claire Beliveau.

Survivors also include ten great-grandchildren; Sonia Elizabeth Moore, Andrew Leslie Moore, Simon William Moore, MacKenzie Alice Smith, Duffy John Smith, Nellie Jane Smith, Alexander Samuel Davis, Martina Yvette Monroe, Makela Yvonne Monroe and Tristyn Michael Beliveau.

Services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at the Sayles Funeral Homes, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury.  Burial will follow at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with Rev. Jay Sprout officiating.

Friends may call on the family Friday, August 11 from 6-8PM at the Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury.
