Alexis Clouatre

April 24, 1930 — April 11, 2017

Alexis R. Clouatre, age 86, of Summer Street and longtime owner of East End Market, passed away at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, VT, on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, following a brief decline in health.

Alex was born Joseph Roland Alexis Clouatre, on April 24, 1930, in St. Johnsbury, VT, son to the late Alexis and Diana (Bodreau) Clouatre.  He was raised and educated in St. Johnsbury graduating from the Academy in the Class of 1948.  He continued his educated at Tufts University in Medford, MA receiving his BA in Economics in 1954. Alex enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 serving stateside and was discharged as 2nd Lieutenant. He later joined the VT National Guard completing his service as Major, Company Commander at the St. Johnsbury Armory in 1968.  Following his service and college, he returned to St. Johnsbury and married the former Lillian Marie LaPerle in 1959 sharing 57 years together.  He owned and operated the East End Market running the store until 1986.  He then started Alex Clouatre Realty which he operated until 1994.  He was a longtime member of St. John the Evangelist Church where he had been a member of the choir and taught in the RCIA program.  He was also a long standing member of the St. Johnsbury Elks Club and the American Legion.  He enjoyed walking and would often be seen on Main Street or at the Green Mountain Mall over the years. For 37 years he was on the Citizens Savings Bank and the Union Bank Board of Directors and served on the St. Johnsbury Tax Stabilization Committee and as Cooperator at NVRH.  Alex was very close to his family including nieces and nephews on both sides – the Clouatres and LaPerles.  He will be deeply missed by all and would like to thank all of those involved in his home care over the past several months.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lillian, his son Timothy and wife, Tausha, all of St. Johnsbury, his brother Francis Clouatre and his wife, Suzanne, of Scarborough, ME, and also his sister-in-law, Lucille Mason of West Hartford, CT. He was predeceased by his sister: Rollande Irvine and her husband, Gerald and by a special friend, Hans LaPerle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Church, on Main & Winter Streets in St. Johnsbury. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Rev. Bernard Gaudreau as celebrant.

Friends may call on the family from 6-8PM Monday evening the 17th at the Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer Street in St. Johnsbury.
